Ingredients

  • Main Ingredients:
  • 3 perfectly ripe avocados see tip below
  • 1/2 small red onion finely diced
  • 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper seeded & finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • Juice of 2 fresh limes about 3 tbsp
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt adjust to taste
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin optional, for warmth
  • 1 small clove garlic minced (optional)
  • Optional Add‑ins:
  • 1/2 small tomato seeded and diced
  • Dash of hot sauce
  • 1 tsp lemon juice for extra tang

Method

  1. Prepare Avocados (5 min): Slice in half, remove pits, and scoop flesh into a bowl.
  2. Test ripeness: Gently press the skin—it should yield slightly but not feel mushy.
  3. Mash the Base (2 min):
  4. Use a fork or potato masher for a chunky texture.
  5. Pro tip: Leave some chunkiness—creamy and chunky textures make the best guac.
  6. Add Mix-ins (2 min):
  7. Mix in onion, cilantro, pepper, garlic (if using), salt, and cumin.
  8. Add Citrus (1 min):
  9. Squeeze in lime juice, stir until well incorporated.
  10. Taste & Adjust (1 min):
  11. Add more salt, lime, or pepper to balance the flavors.
  12. Serve or Store: Serve immediately, or proceed to cool and store.

Notes

  • Pick Perfect Avocados: Ripe if they yield gently when squeezed. Avoid brown or hard spots.
  • Prevent Browning: Press plastic wrap directly on the surface or add a thin layer of lime juice.
  • Chunky vs. Smooth: Fork mash for rustic texture; food processor for silky smooth.
  • Rest Before Serving: Let guac sit 5–10 minutes for flavors to meld.
  • Avoid Over-Salting: Taste mid-way through adding salt to prevent over-seasoning.
