Ingredients

  • Base Ingredients:
  • 2 cups blueberries fresh or frozen – no need to thaw if frozen
  • 1/4 cup sugar granulated, or substitute with maple syrup or honey
  • 2 tablespoons water or orange juice for a citrusy note
  • Flavor Boosters:
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract adds warmth
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest or 1 tablespoon lemon juice balances sweetness
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon brown sugar for a deeper, caramel-like flavor
  • Optional Add-Ins for Texture:
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water for a thicker sauce
  • 1/2 cup fresh berries folded in at the end for bursts of texture

Instructions

  • Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, add blueberries, sugar, and water. Stir gently.
  • Heat it up: Place over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the blueberries begin to release their juices (about 5 minutes).
  • Simmer: Let the mixture cook for another 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
  • Flavor boost: Stir in vanilla extract and lemon juice/zest. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  • Optional thickening: For a thicker compote, whisk together cornstarch and water, then stir into the bubbling berries. Cook for 1–2 minutes more.
  • Cool & serve: Remove from heat. The compote will thicken as it cools. Serve warm or cold depending on your dish.

Notes

  • Don’t overcook: Over-simmering can turn the berries mushy. Aim for jammy but still juicy.
  • Taste as you go: Blueberries vary in sweetness—sometimes you need more sugar, sometimes less.
  • Skip the cornstarch if you like runny sauces: It’s totally optional!
  • Cool to room temperature before storing in a mason jar for best texture.
  • Use frozen berries straight from the freezer: No need to thaw—just increase cook time by 1–2 minutes.
